Escondido Police Chief Jim Maher says protesters who have been holding signs alerting drivers to his department's checkpoints are endangering the community ---- by warning off potentially drunken drivers and prompting others to drive recklessly to avoid the stops.

The protests prompted some drivers to make illegal turns to avoid the checkpoints, but ultimately, the demonstrations probably make the sobriety checkpoints more effective and help to deter drunken driving, Maher said.
"The protests have really been helpful to us, because the key to a good checkpoint is education and awareness, and the fear among those who drive after drinking that they might get caught," he said.
So which one is is it, Jim?
