Escondido tow contractor has smuggling past
City was unaware of co-owner’s felony record
An owner of a tow-truck company awarded a city contract in Escondido pleaded guilty to smuggling an immigrant into the country five years ago.
The criminal record, uncovered by The Watchdog, was unknown to city officials, who are now reviewing the criminal history as part of a larger inquest into the tow company’s contract award.
Evan Sulaiman Khati, 37, co-owns Roadway Auto Towing. The company was awarded the contract July 1 and came under scrutiny in October, when The Watchdog revealed the company lacked required corporation status from the state.
Escondido Mayor Sam Abed said he was not aware of Khati’s immigration conviction, but said that personal ethics are as important to the city when selecting vendors as the company’s professional record.
